A Brave New World: Embracing and Accepting Pain

I think this excerpt from A Brave New World stands perfectly on it’s own, but I ended up having a point I needed to make at the end, which I initially didn’t realize I even had. Thanks for reading.

(The Savage speaking) “But I like the inconveniences.”

“We don’t,” said the Controller. “We prefer to do things comfortably.”

“But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.”

“In fact,” Said Mustapha Mond (The Controller), “you’re claiming the right to be unhappy.”

“All right then,” said the Savage defiantly, “I’m claiming the right to be unhappy.”

“Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent the right to have syphilis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.” There was a long silence.

“I claim them all.” said the Savage at last.

~ Aldous Huxley, A Brave New World

Seeing pain as an inherent part of life, an integral part of it’s mechanism, is the first step to beginning to accept and embrace the pain that is going to be a part of your life. Pain is not just an unfortunate fact of life, it is a vital and necessary part of life that lends credence and beauty to everything else. Light means nothing without Dark.

  1. I love this and what you added at the end. When Darkness came out, she taught us much about Light and Dark. It was odd even to her that she “gave light” to so much of what we were going through, even though she was Darkness.
I used to have what I called a personal motto..before I was aware of my parts.
“You can’t have beauty without the pain. And what is life without the beauty. So, I take both.”
Not sure if that came from any wisdom or just having bipolar, or just being me..but all of it struck me so much with this.
Very beautiful. I have been reading through your blog. It is amazing.
    Much love to you, CC

    • I love the way you put that: “You can’t have beauty without the pain. And what is life without the beauty. So, I take both.”

Regardless of where it came from, it is wise either way.
